Overijssel United win Inaugural Cup

The Champions of the WG Financial Cup were crowned today in West London as Overijssel United FC defeated the hosts Uxbridge Town AFC 5-2 in the final. The Dutch club was able to hoist the trophy after winning three matches, drawing one, and losing one. Overijssel striker Romano Cools was named the MVP of the tournament, scoring 6 goals in 5 matches, including one in the 5th minute of the final.

Wellington Group CEO Geoffrey Wellington was on hand to present the trophy the the victorious side, and was enthusiastic about the play of the football clubs in the tournament in the post-match press conference. "I thought that it was a very entertaining tournament" said Wellington. "A lot of scoring, high flying football, just the overall drama of a cup situation. It is hard to match."

The winning manager Etienne Engelaar spoke highly of his club after the win. "I thought that they played a brilliant match" said Engelaar. "After the 6-1 drubbing we took earlier in the tournament [against Uxbridge], I wasn't sure where we would go. But credit to the team: they fully rallied. We used that match as fuel for the rest of the tournament and we won out from that point on. It was a great showing, and it leaves me very optimistic looking forward to the rest of our season."

Uxbridge manager MacCallum Barry was happy with his team's effort despite the loss. "It was a tough match out there today, and full credit to Etienne for his side's tremendous attack today" said Barry, acknowledging his opposing manager. "I thought that we played well for the most part, held possession of the ball, put together a solid attack. We just weren't able to keep the ball out of the net when it mattered. But it's a lesson. We'll take this one and move forward, try to use it as a motivator."

The Gregory Wellington Memorial Trophy will now remain in the cabinet of the Overijssel for the year before the clubs return to compete for it again next season.
