Geoffrey Wellington, CEO of JR Wellington Group, announced today that the three clubs under the company's sports management division would be competing in a new annual cup competition between themselves. The WG Financial Cup will pit Uxbridge Town AFC, FC Whitehorse Freezers, and Overijssel United FC against each other in a set of home and home matches, with the top two teams advancing to a winner take all final match.
Company executives were at a press event to announce the tournament as well as unveil the prize: the Gregory Wellington Memorial Trophy. "I am excited to see what our teams can do in this sprint of a competition" said Geoffrey Wellington. "I wanted to give our clubs the opportunity to experience the fast paces of a cup competition, and this seemed like the perfect way to do that." When asked about the possibility of future expansion of the cup to other clubs, Wellington seemed open to the idea. "It isn't something that we are able to confirm yet, but we have put some feelers out to see the desire for other clubs to participate in future events. Time will tell."
The competition will kick off in a little less than a month's time, with FC Whitehorse hosting Overijssel United in the opening match.
