In a year that was as near perfection as any fan could have dreamed, FC Aalst won the Season 12 Belgian League title. Setting new Belgian League records in wins (36), points (109), goals for (180), and plus/minus (152), Aalst captured their 2nd league title in 3 seasons. Les Oranges de Gent are the only other team to win 2 Belgian League titles.
"It's great to hoist the trophy for a second time" said the club's manager Benjamin Williamson. "To win the title the first time was fantastic, but to win it twice means that much more to everyone in the organization. Our goal was not just to win, but to remain competitive over several years, and we appear to be accomplishing that. Now we need to regroup and gear up for another season."
Rookie goalkeeper Anselm Boateng was very excited to win the championship in his first professional season. "To start as an 18 year old is one thing. To win the championship is 100 times better." He added somewhat jokingly "Now I want to win one every year. I guess that's the goal."
For the 3rd straight year, the single season scoring record was broken in the Belgian League. And for the 3rd straight year, it was broken by a member of FC Aalst. However, this year Abrahams De Meyer was not the one to break the record. De Meyer's 40 goals were impressive, and enough to bring his career total to 113 in 3 seasons, but it was teammate Kade Joulon that won the Golden Boot. Joulon's 43 goals was one more than De Meyer's 42 from last season, giving Joulon the record. "If this was all that I accomplished this season, I still would have been somewhat disappointed" said Joulon. "In addition to the league title however, makes this award all the more special. To know that I contributed to this team in such a way gives me a great deal of pride."
Most of the core players on this championship club are signed on for this upcoming season and long term, so it is expected that Aalst will once again contend for the title in the Belgian League's 13th season.
